What are the benefits?
With a Hospital Select plan you can get:
- Hospital cover with unlimited cover(*) for general surgery and oral surgery.
- Cover for many pre-existing conditions after a period of three years (**). This can be important if you have had health issues in the past and would like to have them covered in the future.
- And if you are an existing Primary Care Plan Member, you can link your Hospital Select to your Membership, potentially reduce excess by up to the value of $500 in the event of a claim.

Pre-Existing Conditions Covered after 3 years**
Hospital Select plan provides cover for many pre-existing conditions after you have been insured in the scheme for 3 years. As part of UniMed's offer they will provide details as to any conditions that they will provide cover for after 3 years and any serious medical condition that will be excluded for the life of the policy.
Waiting Period: 3 years

General Surgery
Covers the costs associated with eligible surgical treatment, including surgeons’ and anaesthetists' fees, private hospital costs, intensive care, recovery nurse, post operative physiotherapy fees and emergency ambulance for hospital admission, surgically implanted protheses and laparoscopic disposables
Benefit maximum: unlimited*

Minor Surgery
If done by registered medical specialists and not requiring general anaesthetic, including preceding consultation and performed in specialist rooms. Otherwise lower limits apply.
Benefit maximum: up to $300,000 per year

Oral Surgery
All Oral Surgery performed by a Registered Oral Surgeon excluding, under all benefit categories, the extraction or surgical removal of teeth, implantation of teeth or costs of titanium implants. Wisdom tooth extraction including the removal of un-erupted or impacted wisdom teeth, including all associated costs.
Benefit maximum: unlimited*

Medical Hospitalisation
Cover is provided for Non Acute Medical Hospitalisation (Excludes Psychiatric /Geriatric) in a Licensed Private Hospital, on admission and under the care of a Registered Medical Practitioner.
Benefit maximum: up to $65,000 per year

Home Nursing – following surgery
Home Nursing by a Registered Nurse, following surgery in a Private Hospital on referral from a Registered Medical Practitioner.
Benefit maximum: $150 per day, up to $6,000 per year

Hospital Cash Allowance
When admitted to Public Hospital for a full 24 hours or more. Child Benefit - 50% of above. (All injury admissions excluded)
Benefit maximum: $150 per day, up to $1,800 per year

Specialist/Tests
Includes: Specialist Oncologist, Oral Surgeon, Consulting Physician/Paediatrician, X-rays, Mammograms, Ultrasounds, nuclear scanning.
Entitlement period:
six months prior and six months after surgery
Benefit maximum: up to $300,000 per year -
Imaging
Includes: CT Scan, MRI Scan & PET Scan, Cardioversion, Myocardial Perfusion Scan, Scintigraphy.
Benefit maximum: up to $300,000 per year

Cancer Care
- Radiation Oncology: Limited to Planning, Shielding and Accessories, Field Setup and XRT Simulation and performed in an approved Private Hospital facility. Benefit maximum: up to $65,000 per year.
- Chemotherapy: Benefit payable for treatment by a Registered Oncologist in Private Practice. Benefit applies to the cost of materials, chemotherapy drugs which are Pharmac approved, plus hospital accommodation together with approved ancillary hospital costs. Included in this benefit is cover for Non-PHARMAC chemotherapy drugs that are Medsafe approved for the treatment of cancer, up to a maximum of $10,000 per annum. Included in cover is genetic/genomic testing. Testing is payable following a cancer diagnosis and referral by a Registered Oncologist. Benefit maximum: up to $65,000 per year.
- Surveillance Following Cancer Treatment: Following surgery or treatment for cancer, associated with an eligible claim under your policy, cover exists for Registered Specialist consultations and investigations related to the cancer diagnosis. Benefit maximum: Surveillance $3,000 for 5 years following treatment. -
Rewards for Loyalty
- Overseas surgery: a grant is payable of 100% of usual and customary charge for the identical procedure in New Zealand. Benefit maximum: up to $30,000 per year.
- Obesity surgery grant: a one-time grant is payable of 50% of actual costs up to the benefit limit. Benefit maximum: $8,000 per lifetime. From 01.04.24 Breast reduction surgery is included. For Breast Reduction Surgery, an underlying medical condition must apply. Excluding removal of implants or cosmetic reduction
Waiting period:
Benefits apply after five years' continuous membership in this plan. -
Waiver of Premium & Funeral grant
- Upon death by natural or accidental causes prior to age 65 (***) of any member paying the adult contribution rate the surviving spouse and/or qualifying dependents named on the policy will receive two years free coverage at the benefit levels applying at the date of death.
- Upon death by natural or accidental causes prior to age 65 of any person on the policy a grant towards funeral costs is $2400.

(*) From 1 April 2024, cover for general surgery and oral surgery increase from $300,000 to Unlimited.
(**) What is a pre-existing condition?
- A pre-existing condition is a health or medical condition that was in existence on or before the person’s Cover Start Date.
- At that time the person:
- May have known about the condition; or
- May not have known about the condition but did know of a health history or symptoms which could have indicated the possible existence of the condition to a medical practitioner.
If any of these conditions are developed after joining the Hospital Select plan they would be covered subject to the normal terms and conditions of the plan.
However, there are some pre-existing conditions that are permanently excluded for the life of the policy; (Cardiovascular/vascular related conditions, Conditions that may result in the requirement for joint replacement surgery, musculoskeletal conditions, injuries, Cancer, Gynaecological disorders).
(***) From 01 April 2024, the waiver of premium age increase from 60 to 65.
