NZEI Te Riu Roa advocates for quality public education and is New Zealand’s largest education union – 50,000 principals, teachers and support staff who work in primary, area and secondary schools as well as early childhood centres, special education and school advisory services.

The New Zealand Post Primary Teachers' Association (PPTA) is a voluntary trade union and professional association. For over 50 years PPTA members have worked in schools and nationally to ensure all young people in New Zealand have equitable access to a high quality public education.

The Tertiary Institutes Allied Staff Association (TIASA Te Hononga) is the specialist staff association and union for allied (also known as general - non-teaching) staff across the New Zealand tertiary education sector.

TIASA’s history is a proud one, with an enviable 40+ year record of success working to protect and improve the workplace environment and professional interests of TIASA members everywhere. The association was formed by and for tertiary education sector allied staff, who back in 1969 recognised the need for a dedicated, expert allied staff voice that understood, could protect and would enhance allied staff conditions of employment, role and profile. In 1989 Maori Delegates became involved and over the next 10 years, a Maori caucus was formed and Te Hononga Maori was established.

The Independent Schools Education Association began in 1967 at a meeting held at Dilworth School, Auckland. Those attending saw a need for a professional body representing the interests of teachers in independent schools.

At first the organisation catered for secondary school teachers and as such was called the Independent Secondary Schools Assistant Teachers Association (ISSATA). It was not long before the secondary criterion was dropped and primary teachers became involved as well (ISATA). A further name change took place in 1989 when the word Assistant was dropped from the title and the Association assumed the name (ISTANZ). In 2007 another name change was necessary in order to include the many support staff members of NZ independent schools thus bringing about today’s name of Independent Schools Education Association (ISEA).

ISEA provides advice on employment issues and entitlements to its members. This includes supporting and advocating on behalf of members with employers including members who have employment issues and/or personal grievances, and bargaining collectively on behalf of members (where ISEA have successfully negotiated a Collective Agreement).
